MASON CITY – One person was taken to the hospital today when a Mason City hotel caught fire.

On August 25, 2023, at approximately 1:37 AM, the Mason City Fire Department was dispatched for an automatic fire alarm at 24 5th St SW, known as the EconoLodge. Fire crews arrived to find smoke coming from an apartment. The building’s sprinkler system kept the flames under control until fire crews arrived to fully extinguish the fire. The interior of the apartment received fire, smoke, and water damage, with no spread of fire to adjacent rooms.

One person was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injures. No other injuries were reported. Building residents were able to return to their apartments for the night.

Emergency crews cleared the scene at approximately 4:23 AM. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fire crews were assisted by Mason City Police Department.
