JOHNSON COUNTY, IOWA – A 16-vehicle pileup claimed two lives on an Iowa Interstate highway Sunday morning, near Iowa City.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, this accident occurred on Sunday, January 8, 2023, near the 246 mile marker of Interstate 80 in Johnson county at Iowa City. At 5:30 AM, the freeway became ice-covered. Due to the weather conditions, a 2023 Volvo semi driven by 37-year-old Johan Caballero-Venero of Houston, Texas, lost control and jackknifed. All three lanes of westbound I-80 were blocked. This caused a chain-reaction accident involving a total of 16 vehicles, including at least 9 semis. The jackknifed semi was struck in the rear by a 2014 Chevy truck driven by David L Mosinski of Fairfield, Iowa. More collisions followed.
AS a result of the crash, Mosinski was killed. The patrol says that a passenger in jackknifed semi, 37-year-old Junier Caballero-Venero of Houston, Texas, exited the semi after the initial crash and was killed outside the vehicle.
All other injuries were minor. Those subject were taken to University of Iowa Hospital for treatment.

This tragedy happens in Iowa a lot, it seems. Two weeks ago we saw 19 jackknifed trucks between Albert Lea MN and Des Moines. Hmmmmm, does this reveal a situation where Iowa DOT is failing to keep the roads salted? Kinda looks that way. And it also seems like this Northiowatoday.com site has a bias against trucks, because their “other top stories” all focus on accidents with semis. To put this in perspective, 20 years ago we drove thru Iowa and the same thing was happening, 100 vehicles in the ditch between What Cheer Iowa and Des Moines. Hmmm, take all the time you need here folks, but somebody needs to get kicked in the ass at the DOT because this seems to be an ongoing problem.
