PALO ALTO COUNTY – An Algona man is dead and a Garner man injured in a head-on crash on Highway 18.

The accident took place on Sunday, June 12, 2022. At about 10:07 PM that evening, 26-year-old Landon R. Schiek of Algona was traveling eastbound in a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer on Highway 18, east of Cylinder, Iowa, in Palo Alto county. At the same time and location, 45-year-old Brian M. Freeman of Garner was westbound in a 2011 Chevy Silverado. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Freeman approached a slight right hand curve and failed to follow the curve and crossed the center line and struck Schiek’s vehicle nearly head-on.

As a result of the collision, Schiek was killed. Freeman was flown by Mercy Air One to Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

The accident remains under investigation.
