Fatal accident reported near Mason City airport involving wrong-way driver

RURAL MASON CITY – A fatal accident has been reported near the Mason City airport, claiming the life of a Clear Lake man.

The accident happened Friday evening, November 15 at about 6:36 PM on US Highway 122, near the Mason City airport. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan was eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 122 when the van struck a 1991 Ford F150 traveling westbound in the left lane. The collision was reportedly head-on.

As a result of the accident, there was one fatality and one injury. The driver of the pickup, 51-year-old Travis Stohr of Woden, Iowa, was seriously hurt and hospitalized in Rochester. The driver of the van, 80-year-old Richard Westcott of Clear Lake, died in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Cerro Gordo Sheriff Deputies, Clear Lake Fire Department and Mason City EMS.

    1. Travis Stohr is my brother-in-law. How dare you make such an insensitive comment about this horrible accident? You are a classic internet troll, aren’t you? You post inflammatory and digressive comments for your own entertainment. Was that your motivation? Were you at the scene of the accident? Have you seen Travis with his extensive injuries? Have you seen his wife and family praying for his recovery? The next time you want to make comments on a post, use your real name instead of cowardly using anonymous. Thank God there are more good people in this world than trolls like you. The family has had such an outpouring of support and prayers from friends and strangers. Try to be a better person!!!

      FYI- to address your actual comment about how he couldn’t see the van coming to save his life. Travis was not at fault. Witnesses at the scene of the accident have confirmed that. There was no way he could have gotten out of the way of the van.
