Softball: Weilbacher Gem, Stites Home Run Send ISU Past Hokies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Iowa State softball team (9-7) took down Virginia Tech (7-7) 2-0 on Friday behind a season-high 10 strikeouts from senior pitcher Brianna Weilbacher.

Sydney Stites launched a solo home run, her first of the season, and went 2-for-3 at the plate on the day. Weilbacher notched her third complete game shutout of the season, putting in 7.0 innings of work while giving up no runs on just five hits.

The Cyclones got on the board in the top of the second inning, as Stites led off the frame by crushing a solo bomb to right center. It was the junior’s first home run as a Cyclone, and the 20th of her collegiate career, and provided a much-needed offensive reprieve from the pitcher’s dual between Weilbacher and Hokie ace Carrie Eberle.

Weilbacher and the ISU defense were phenomenal all day, as the Cyclones did not commit a single error on the day, and were tremendous in getting out of trouble when Virginia Tech threatened.

In the bottom of the fifth, with ISU clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Hokies notched back-to-back base hits to lead off the inning. They moved the runners over to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Caroline Schoenewald.

Olivia Lattin then ripped a line drive down the left field that that looked like it would score at least one VT run. However, Cyclone third baseman Nychole Antillon made a phenomenal play to snag the ball and tag the runner out at third to end the inning and get Iowa State out of trouble.

The Cyclones notched an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, as Taylor Nearad knocked a bases-loaded RBI single up the middle to score Jackie Chairez, giving ISU a 2-0 lead.

Weilbacher slammed the door shut on the Hokies, with four strikeouts in the final two innings to secure the victory.

On Deck
Due to a schedule change, Iowa State’s games tomorrow have been pushed back an hour. The Cyclones will now face Middle Tennessee (12 p.m. CT) and North Florida (5 p.m.) on Saturday for day two of the Courtyard Marriott Osprey Classic.
