GARNER, IOWA – A former Garner man has been found guilty of felony drunk driving and was sentenced this week.

On May 5, 2016, a unanimous Hancock County jury found Alexander Jay Howie, age 29 of Minneapolis, Minnesota but formerly of Garner, guilty of operating while intoxicated. The court then determined the conviction qualified as a third offense, which is a class D felony.

Howie was stopped and arrested by Hancock county deputies back on August 23, 2015.

The Hancock County Attorney’s Office reports that on Tuesday, the court sentenced Howie on his felony operating while intoxicated conviction. The court gave him a suspended five year prison sentence but required him to serve 30 days in jail. He will be on probation for three years and must complete treatment; comply with drug/alcohol testing; complete a drinking driver’s course; and pay fines of $3125 plus surcharges, costs, and fees. The court also ordered the DOT to revoke his license.
