MASON CITY – If you are concerned that certain gadgets and devices that emit radio frequency (RF) “pulses” may be the source of health problems, there is an educational event just for you set for next week.

“Think ‘smart’ utility meters, routers, laptops, baby monitors, cell phones, and other wireless devices,” says event organizer Chris Ressler of Mason City.

RF pulses have been called “possibly carcinogenic to humans” and may exacerbate cancer, according to studies. The most vulnerable are thought to be children, pregnant women and elderly. Health concerns include retinal damage, sleep disruption, depression, infertility, cardiac problems and memory loss. Research shows biological effects occur including cell membrane and DNA changes.

This community education event covering radio frequency pulses and its possible health effects will be held on September 15 at 5:00 PM at the Music Man Square – Reunion Hall, 308 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

Mrs. Ressler (MS, Family ARNP-BC, Gerontological ARNP-BC) will present background on the radio frequency issue. A question and answer phone conference will also be a part of the presentation featuring Blake Levitt, an award-winning author and health/science journalist with expertise on how technology affects biology.

Concern in Mason City has been spawned by the widespread installation of thousands of “smart” water meters that emit radio frequency pulses.  City staff claim to be working on a city-wide opt-out provision and a more uniform policy to govern the installation of the meters that would be available to all water customers.
