According to the Humane Society, 8 newborn kittens were found alive in a dumpster at a Mason City gas station – Kum n Go, located at 1224 North Federal – on Thursday evening this week.
An employee saw an individual throw a black garbage bag into the gas station’s dumpster. The employee went to investigate and found the bag containing 8 live kittens. The employee called the Mason City Police Department, who picked up the kittens and brought them to the Mason City Stray Animal Shelter.
The Mason City Stray Animal Shelter is co-located and managed by the Humane Society of North Iowa, who provides care to all animals in the shelter.
Sybil Soukup, Executive Director of the Humane Society of North Iowa released the following statement:
“It is with heavy heart that I report all 8 kittens have perished at the shelter. We certainly put forth great effort to save their lives, but they were too young and their health too far gone for us to help them survive. None of the kittens has their eyes open and many still had umbilical cords attached. When kittens are removed from their mother at such a young age, chances of survival are slim.
This is the second incident in less than a week where an animal has suffered at the hands of humans in our community. Winnie, the cat that was stuffed into a duffel bag and thrown into the Winnebago River last weekend, survived her ordeal, thanks to some curious onlookers who saved her.
However, these 8 kittens, though rescued by another curious onlooker, did not survive.
We are shocked and saddened at both of these tragedies taking place in our community. Pets are not disposable. They are living creatures who do not deserve to be thrown away, tortured or killed. Situations like this also remind us how important it is to spay and neuter your pets so that there are no unwanted litters.”
The kittens included 4 buff colored kittens and 4 dark tabby colored kittens. They were estimated to be only a few days old and were found in a garbage bag that had been placed in a gas station’s dumpster on North Federal Avenue. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the Mason City Police Department at: 641-421-3636.

makes me wonder if its the same guy who threw the cat into the river? put 2 and 2 together throw cat in the river her kittens in the dumpster
Whoever does crap like this is a true scumbag and deserves to be punished. Im not talking an aggravated misdemeanor charge like that other POS earlier this week. Makes me sick.
It’s been a bad week for cats in Mason City.
More cats have been abused than bottles of vodka at Eric’s house, and it’s pure carnage over there, I’m told.
Someone said in another post that the kittens were found in the garbage can by the entrance door not the dumpster. They should make a quick arrest by looking at the cameras. This is sickening!
There must of been someone already living in the dumpster. Poor cats
