MCPD seeking grant to help pay for traffic light pre-emption kits

MASON CITY – The Mason City Police Department is looking to obtain grant funding from the Prairie Meadows Community Betterment Grant to install Global Positioning System (GPS) kits on squad cars.

The GPS kits would would allow police vehicles access to the emergency vehicle traffic pre-emption system that funding has already been secured for through an Assistance to Firefighters grant that the Mason City Fire Department applied for earlier.

The system, when fully installed, will reduce response times and minimize the potential for death and serious injury as emergency responders travel throughout the city.

$45,500 has already been budgeted for this project, according to a City Hall memo, but the grant would be worth $20,000 if approved.

The Mason City Council will vote Tuesday night on whether to apply for the grant.

Observer…not only have the signal and light standards not been painted in 17 years, but the parking signs in the city lots appear as if some drunken installer placed them…most look like they are “waving” goodbye. What a town! And let’s not talk about the streets in the inner core.

Why has Mason City never figured out how to run there stop lights? When leaving town today heading west. I had to stop at every stop light. No wonder you got so many fender benders. I bet a lot of people require break jobs every year.

Geezzzz B G Whered ya lern to speel??

I wish the city council would have used the $40,000 for this NEED instead of the sculptures. They could have applied for grant money for the sculpture project instead of using tax money for that. It would have been way more appropriate and they wouldn’t have caused near the uproar they did. I’m afraid some citizens are so POed about what the city council did that those sculptures will be trashed immediately. I hope not, but it wouldn’t surprise me with the anger issues some bloggers on here have. I hope the MCPD will be on its toes and catches anyone who tries!

Take off the profit for the Park Inn & get the rest forgivable loan from Harley.

How about painting the traffic lights…and work from there. Use you own money…the feds are broke and all you’d be getting is money borrowed from China!!!

The application, as the article states, was to the Prairie Meadows Community Betterment Grant (fund?), which is not dependant on Federal revenues. Parairie Meadows I believe is a race track near Des Moines.

Al, I left out of my comment the agreement on painting the light standards in town. It looks shoddy at best. I guess the budget does not account for maintaining them. My apologies.

I oft times wonder if bringing up subjects like this in blogs puts a spotlight on issues in our community, and brings action. One can only hope.

And we will get a remodeled city hall (with wet) bar for beermeyer and his croonies.

At least we got statues!
