INDEPENDENCE – An Iowa man who was hit by a train as he walked along the tracks has been arrested and charged with trespassing.
On Thursday, January 08, 2015, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Chad Leonard King, age 32, of Independence. King was arrested and charged with Trespassing resulting in Injury (a serious misdemeanor). This arrest was made following an investigation into King walking on Canadian National Railroad tracks east of Independence.
According to law enforcement, on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at approximately 9:20 PM, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Canadian National Railroad of a subject that had been struck by a train. This was reported to have happened along railroad tracks between Lucas Avenue and Nathan Bethel Avenue east of Independence.
According to the investigation, an eastbound Canadian National train had struck King as he was walking east along the tracks. King was found with only minor injuries and speaking to train crew members when emergency personnel arrived.
King told Sheriff’s Deputies that he had been walking on the outer edge of the railroad ties to Winthrop from Independence and had heard the train coming, but thought he was far enough off to the side of the tracks that the train could pass by. King was struck in the left leg by the lead edge of the train and thrown clear of the tracks. He was transported to the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence for treatment. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Winthrop Fire Department and Area Ambulance Service.
I’m surprised they didn’t charge him with littering. I’d have thought he would have had the crap scared out of him too.
