FORT MADISON – Leonard Eugene Berg, an inmate assigned to the Iowa State Penitentiary, died January 4, 2015. During a routine living unit check, Berg was discovered unresponsive with no heartbeat or breathing. Medical staff were immediately deployed and Berg was pronounced deceased at approximately 3:15 PM.
Berg died of natural causes from coronary artery disease.
Berg was 76 years old and serving a life sentence from Linn County for Murder First Degree and Assault with Intent of Injury. This sentence began on June 18, 1985.
