MASON CITY – An incident unfolded Thursday evening in Mason City that involved a homicide.
The incident was reported to have occurred sometime late Thursday around 8:30 PM at the 2900 block of 1st Street SW.
Multiple law enforcement agencies were at the scene, including an ambulance. Sources indicated that at least one person was taken into custody. The victim and the suspect may have been related.
NIT will not be releasing any more information until authorities deem it appropriate.
UPDATE FROM MASON CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT:
The Mason City Police Department is investigating the death of Anastasios “Tom” Barlas Sr., age 73, of Mason City, Iowa. At around 8:45 pm on Thursday, July 18, 2013, Officers were called to the residence at 2921 1St Street SW, where Barlas was found deceased. Thomas G. Barlas Jr., age 42, of Mason City was taken into custody a short time later and charged with 1st
Degree murder. A conviction for lst Degree murder carries a penalty of life in prison.
