Northern Iowa man pulled from burning vehicle after crash

MILFORD, IOWA - A Northern Iowa man's Lincoln Town Car burst into flames after a crash and two good samaritans saved him from the fiery inferno.

MILFORD, IOWA – A Northern Iowa man’s Lincoln Town Car burst into flames after a crash and two good samaritans saved him from the fiery inferno.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that was reported at 8:21 PM on October 20, 2023, at the intersection of Hwy 71 & 240 Street, south of Milford. Timothy Hemphill, age 76 of Milford, was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram pulling a farm trailer loaded with a combine corn head, crossing the four lanes of highway 71, eastbound. Clearance Schweitzer, age 82 of Spencer, was driving a 2005 Lincoln Town Car southbound on highway 71 and struck the farm trailer that was being pulled by Hemphill, detaching the trailer from the Dodge.

Schweitzer sustained incapacities injuries in the crash, the sheriff’s office reports. Schweitzer’s vehicle caught fire. Schweitzer was pulled from the vehicle by Hemphill and other passersby before it became fully engulfed in flames. (Photo, above, of Lincoln via sheriff’s office.)

Schweitzer was transported by ambulance with incapacitating injuries to Lakes Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake.

Hemphill was cited for failure to yield upon entering highway.

Schweitzer’s vehicle was a total loss. Hemphill’s Dodge was not damaged but the trailer and corn head were a total loss.
