John Skipper doesn’t teach a writing class for nothing, this guy writes in code. Today’s Monday column fortifies that. Read it but read it carefully, take your time and dissect it as if your were in a biology class.
John is a big Bookmeyer proponent, when it comes to this coming election there isn’t a shred of impartiality in his body…..he loves Turncoat, too. It’s OK to like these people as long as you stay on your meds.
John talks about the 5 minute limit at the podium, what he left out was this Budweiser baby first did away with the public forum altogether… but reinstated it after public pressure came to bear. He leaves out the fact that Bookmeyer slammed the door on the downtrodden by cutting the budget of the HR department by citing excessive cost, then he blew what he saved by moving his desk. He says discipline, decorum and diligence have returned to the council….he leaves out any mention of intelligence… he did the right thing there. He says Bookmeyer has not yet declared his intention as to whether he’ll run again. He leaves out the fact that after the disastrous first term, and zero accomplishments, it would take an enormous amount of nerve to ask for another go at it. I suspect he’s looking for that nerve now. The best thing he could do for this community is to bestow a healing gift and hang it up.
He is quick to point out that Draper is a new comer to politics; he could have said she was a redeemer who brings with her the promise of salvation and the end of pestilence. He briefly touches on Solberg and Hickey. If the amount of attention he gave them was in any way tied to their accomplishments while serving on the council… he by far over did himself. Going back to Bookmeyer; when he said some just plain don’t like him… you think? That’s not rocket science… that is the only straight line he wrote.

I’ve known Peter Children for 50 years and I have never known of him sleeping with a married woman.
It’s interesting that he has never denied any of these allegations, though, and there have been several over the past couple years. I’ve always wondered if these allegations are why he hasn’t run for public office.
Either these rumors/allegations are true and that makes him a sick puppy or they are not true, and Peter not denying it, makes him a REALLY sick puppy.
I agree with senior native; these are nothing but vicious rumers surrounding Mr. Children. I heard he even helps prepare food for his church festival, some one like that is a true pure Christian.
If the last 2 comments are true, Peter is the man!!!
Peter, thanks for thinking of me as your favorite. Why? Was it because of you screwing my wife while I was at Guard duty?
Peter banged my wife too, back in 1964. I’m still not over it.
Can you offer any kind of proof?
“Proof” is the 4 letter word on this site. I know, I know it is actually a 5 letter word but Peter wouldn’t know the difference.
For the record; I like John Skipper…..always have. He is a terrific writer, head and shoulders above my abilities. But John is human like the rest of us and as such he picks sides. In Americabyou’re allowed to do that with impunity….and that includes Mason City.
The problem does not lie solely upon John’s shoulders, it is the mind set of the management of the local paper to “have their way” as they always have. For 100’years they were the only printed source of news and that was a powerful instrument. This website changed that forever, now more people get their news here than there are subscribers to the Globe. John is “employed” and writes in the direction he’s told. I have no proof of that of course….but John is only doing his job. Just don’t believe every word of it.
Where’s your proof that more people get their news from NIT than subscribe to the Globe? Numbers, please.
Same old story from NIT supporters. Complain, complain but offers no solutions. If any of the present counsil members up for re-election or the mayor announce their intentions to run for re-election, NIT has nothing to offer as a solution since there is no solution to solve. Council meetings are now being conducted without a bunch of hoopla. If there is disagreement, it is handled with respect. No fighting for media attention. Something NIT doesn’t get.
Let us recap. Peter doesn’t like Bookmeyer. Peter doesn’t like Tourquist because he likes Bookmeyer. Peter doesn’t like Skipper because he likes Bookmeyer. Peter probably doesn’t like me because I like what Bookmeyer is doing.Did I mention that Peter REALLY doesn’t like Bookmeyer. I have to admit this was a revelation because up to this point I thought Peter was warming up to the Mayor.;>)
Good Read!
One point I would clearly disagree with is the decorum comment. Anyone running for office this fall should address decorum as an issue, because there is no decorum. With all the negativity from the Mayor and Council, “Restoring Decorum,” should be a front and center issue.
Lying, cheating, stealing, and public drunkenness from our current Mayor is hardly Decorum!
Yes, Skipper has drank the Bookie Koolaid and shows his colors in his recent editorial. VOTE ALL OF THESE BUMS OUT!!!
Joe: If you vote these bums out, who you gonna vote in? So far only two people have announced their desire to run for office.
Peter, Peter If it doesn’t spread it’s legs you just don’t get an objective view.
No endorsements. No bold lies. No conspiracy theory.
I just don’t know what you see.
Sure Skippy isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread but you only want to slice and dice him.
Try to be objective occasionally. Notice I did write occasionally. You should handpick a set of candidates and publicly endorse and finance them. After all you are the smartest, richest wife chaser I ever met.
Hacker you’re my favorite; but you might want to re-think the wife chaser part. Did you ever think it was the other way around? Lot of unhappy women when their husband comes home drunk….doesn’t brush his teeth or shower. You might think of me as performing a public service.
So Peter when these women would come to you, the public service you performed of course, was to go to her home and sober her husband up, helped him brush his teeth but please Peter tell me you didn’t shower with the husband. The horror, the horror.
There is nothing positive to say about Bookmeyer and this council. Mason City still does not have job growth that can support a family and if you ask any city employee they will tell you morale is terrible and they think their city government is being run by the chamber of commerce.
Isn’t Skipper merely describing the players at the moment and challenges some may encounter? It’s kind of describing a parade and who is marching by.
As to Bookmeyer’s five minute limit, I can understand why it is there; some members of the public would stand there and continue talking without ever making their point. It also applies to council members who tend to pontificate. I have better things to do than listen to either ramble on forever.
Children commented that “Bookmeyer slammed the door on the downtrodden by cutting the budget of the HR department”. I sharply disagree. Taxpayers have been paying twice (state & city) for access to a HR function – one is enough.
4ever49 you are right about the 5 min rule. It was definitely aimed at Max and Cheryl. They both go off on tangents that only they can understand. It is a much better run council meeting now. These people can always talk after the meeting, off regular TV, which is fine with me. Matt usually has it on this website anyway so it is a win/win.
Good article Peter. Lot of truth in what you say here. I read Skippers article very slowly this morning and then went to the bathroom to throw up. What a crock of B.S. How can they let him write a whole column and say nothing?
You are so right Matt, REMEMBER NOVEMBER
Matt didn’t write this.
No I didn’t write this but once again Mr. Children hits it out of the park. Are Skipper and Bookmeyer secretly in love? No one can be sure. I have seen them in Bookmeyer’s office alone, with the door closed. Seemed odd and weird. Lord only knows what could have been going on in there.
