Men save elderly man and dog from icy waters Saturday at Iowa great lakes

DICKINSON COUNTY - Five men saved an elderly man and his dog Saturday at the Iowa great lakes area when the man's Jeep left a roadway and plunged into icy waters.

DICKINSON COUNTY – Five men saved an elderly man and his dog Saturday at the Iowa great lakes area when the man’s Jeep left a roadway and plunged into icy waters.

According to the Dickinson county sheriff’s office, aJeep went through the ice under the Highway 71 bridge near Arnold’s Park.

“Five gentlemen pulled the 83-year-old driver and his dog from the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said.  “The five were Joe Salmon of Spirit Lake, Corey McConnell of Spirit Lake, Kody Harrelson of Nevada, Cody Chester of Estherville, and Chris Parks of Hawarden.

“Special thanks to the Okoboji Store for allowing these gentlemen to dry off inside. The driver was transported to LRH and is doing well. The dog was dried out and is doing well. Thanks to Okoboji Police, Arnold’s Park/Okoboji Rescue & dive team and LRH paramedics.”

The vehicle will be removed from the water on Sunday.
