Arizona mom, in Mexican jail, says she reads Scripture to survive

NOGALES, Mexico, May 30 (UPI) — Yanira Maldonado, in her Nogales, Mexico, jail cell, said she relies on Scripture to survive since being accused of attempting to smuggle marijuana.

Maldonado, 42, of Goodyear, Ariz., a mother of seven and a devout Mormon, was arrested by Mexican authorities last week as she and her husband, Gary, were traveling back from a funeral in Mexico by bus.

Police claim 12 pounds of marijuana was found under her bus seat during a routine investigation, CNN reported.

She has maintained her innocence as family members publicized her situation and sought the help of Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and the U.S. State Department. A Sonora, Mexico, judge is expected to decide whether to free her by Friday.

She told CNN she has been “reading the Scriptures, reading the Book of Mormon, praying, fasting. They (police) say they found something under my seat, but I never saw anything. They didn’t show me anything. It was just amazing, what they did.”
