WASHINGTON, May 27 (UPI) — Texas leads the nation in population growth with eight of the 15 fastest-growing large towns and cities in America located in the state, the Census Bureau says.

Only Texas had more than one city among the 15 fastest-growing cities in the country with populations of more than 50,000 in 2012, the Bureau said in a report released Thursday.

The Texas city of San Marcos, between Austin and San Antonio, had the highest rate of growth. Other Texas cities on the list were sprinkled around the state.

New York topped the list of fastest-growing cities — which also included South Jordan, Utah; Clarksville, Tenn.; and the cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, Calif.

Austin pushed out Jacksonville, Fla., to move from 13th to 11th on the list. Indianapolis dropped from 12th to 13th.
