Steckman chosen to lead education post in Iowa House

Des Moines, Iowa – House Democratic Leader Kevin McCarthy of Des Moines has appointed Representative Sharon Steckman to several key posts for the upcoming 2013 legislative session. Steckman will lead House Democrats on Education issues as the ranking member of the Education Committee.

“As a teacher, Sharon Steckman is a strong leader for the House Democrats on education issues,” noted McCarthy. “Sharon’s experience in the classroom will help build Iowa’s educational system to create a highly skilled workforce here in Iowa.”

In addition to serving as Ranking Member on the Education Committee, she will also serve on the State Government, Environmental Protection, and the Education Appropriations Subcommittee.

“I am humbled to be chosen for a second year to lead the House Democrats on education issues. We have made great strides to ensuring a better future for our children,” noted Representative Steckman. “I believe both sides have made education their top priority, which means it is time to improve student achievement, expand professional development for teachers, and ensure schools receive equitable and adequate funding,” Steckman added.

Representative Sharon Steckman was elected to a third term in the Iowa House of Representatives in November.

The 85th General Assembly will convene its first day of session on January 14, 2013.

I think this is probably a good position for her. She certainly has the teaching experience as long as she can step aside and see the other point of view as well. She needs to be able to understand the layman’s point of view when she is making decisions.
