Op-ed: Real joy is giving, not receiving (by Peter Children)

This year is racing to its end, for some it could be a good thing, for other perhaps not.  It has been reported both on this site and in the local paper that three young women in this area have been charged with child abuse…how horrible is that?  Yesterday while shopping I ran into an old friend and found out he is consoling child abuse victims….not something I could do, I am far too emotional for that job. He told me that many nights he lies awake unable to shake the images described by the young children as to the horrors they live through, the cruelty melted out by the very ones who gave them birth.

“It is the time of year,” he said, “a lot of stress, more than usual brought on by the demands of the holiday…that and so many are out of work,” he went on to say. This is what I say; “ Job or no job, money or no money, you do not take it out on your children or your spouse, your home…however it might be should be a haven, a sanctuary from the outside streets and playgrounds your child must deal with on a daily basis.” Your child is not the reason you are out of work, your child is not the reason you cannot buy everything you want… chances are more than likely you yourself are the reason.  Child abuse should carry a mandatary prison sentence…not county jail or a local lockup, prison, hard time for a minimum of six months….to start, longer if the crime warrants it.

If you suspect child abuse, I urge you to report it immediately; if you don’t it could mean the possible death of a child or crippling beatings.

We all know the world is not a perfect place, but for a defenseless child it should not be a battleground every day of their young lives….as they grow to maturity, if they ever do, there will be battles they will be better equipped to confront as adults. This is a season centered on the very young; and that is another issues altogether…teach you child at a early age that the real joy of this season is in giving, not receiving………

I have to agree with Peter. Get the drug users (especially marijuana users) out of our prison system. This will make room for the violent offenders who NEED to REMAIN in prison for our and our children’s safety. It just makes no sense to let child abusers go with a slap on the wrist. In my opinion this is the worst form of violence there is, whether it be physical or mental abuse. They both scar for life.

why is it hard to achieve uniform justice? One issue is not any less important than any other issue. They are all intertwined, and they all involve our Justice System. The point of Mr. Children’s article is to get tough on child abusers, and hand out tougher sentences. Since we would have to make room for the extra intake of prisoners (as there are many abusers in this world), we would need to make room, and non-violent drug offenders would be the perfect candidates to be removed, while violent people in our society take their place. This includes mom or dad. If they are doing heinous stuff behind closed “family” doors…they need to be exposed and face punishment. I’m all for it.

Peter, why must you inject that insanity? No one cares if you can get your pot legally (and quite honestly, the subject has become quite inane). As Mr. Children rightly pointed out, there are far more important things we need to focus on.

None more important than abuse of helpless children.

I wholeheartedly agree! God bless those in need this holiday season…especially kids.

I agree, and what really sucks is people who are busted for personal drug use serving more time than people who commit violence towards other people, and children. The entire Justice System is skewed and needs urgent reform. Too bad Obama is NOT the man to do that reform.
