UPDATED: Suspicious package investigated at Southbridge Mall

MASON CITY – The suspicious package at Southbridge Mall found this morning was x-rayed and no harmful materials were found. “It was ‘old food’ in the bag,” one bystander said.

The blue writing that said “bomb squad” that was spray painted on the concrete slab near the suspicious package was there long before the suspicious package that was left near it.

The package was taken away to be analyzed.

Southbridge Mall security spotted a suspicious package early Thursday morning near the railing south of Younkers at Southbridge Mall.

There was blue writing on the cement slab that the package was leaning against that said “bomb squad.”

The package is a brown paper bag and emergency officials are still trying to decide how to open the package.
