MASON CITY – The Mason City Police Department and Neighborhood Services Division has begun to assess property owners for nuisance violations.

The first area assessed includes the area north of 7th Street NW and west of North Federal and east of N. Pierce. In this area, officers and inspectors found over 160 addresses with suspected nuisance violations. Some of the types of violations include:

Junked, non-running or unregistered vehicles and boats

Large piles of garbage or brush

Old building materials and fixtures

Old appliances

Over the next two weeks, property owners suspected to be in violation will be notified of the alleged nuisance and given a certain amount of time to comply with the ordinance or request a hearing.

Many of the nuisance violations are easily resolved, such as gathering garbage or brush and placing it curbside for pickup or moving an old appliance or vehicle into a garage.
