Mason City man arrested for 3rd degree theft

MASON CITY – A Mason City man was arrested Sunday for public intoxication and 3rd degree theft.

Jeffrey John Hargis, 44, was arrested by Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s deputies at the Kum & Go gas station located at 418 South Federal Avenue at at about 6:15 PM.  No further details on what Hargis attempted to steal was available, but the theft of property exceeding five hundred dollars but not exceeding one thousand dollars in value, or the theft of any property not exceeding five hundred dollars in value by one who has before been twice convicted of theft, is theft in the third degree.  Theft in the third degree is an aggravated misdemeanor.

Hargis has been convicted of fifth degree theft once in 2006  and twice in 2011 in which he still owes the court $389.13 and $649.00 respectively.  All those charges were brought by Mason City police.

Hargis has had numerous charges involving violence dismissed including assault on a peace officer and domestic assault as well as eluding law enforcement, in which he was found guilty.  Hargis also still owes the courts $3,065.75 from a 2007 OWI case in which judge Carlynn Grupp initially gave Hargis a deferred judgement.

Hargis was taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail where he remained Monday evening, waiting to see a judge.

All comes down to dollars and cents. Iowa, among many other states doesn’t have the money to lock up non violent offenders.

You have been bailed out by others all your life, it is about time you and only you pay for your mistakes. Grow up and realise your actions have consequences.

What the hell happened to you, Jeff? You weren’t reared like this. It’s time to grow up, get some help, and take some responsibility.

I like LVS’s idea of keeping him in jail until his fines are paid. There is absolutely no reason he should be free. How many chances has he had given to him by worthless judges, only to end up back in jail.
It’s got to be frustrating for the MCPD to see these criminals released and back on the street time and again. It’s just sickening to see the waste of tax payers money and then to have it topped off by losers not even paying their fines.

Keep him in jail until someone pays his past due fines. Feed him with a slingshot if need be.

That is a great idea for MORE overcrowding! Thanks!

Overcrowding??? haha cerro gordo county jail is not over crowded

Praying For you! Accept some help.

Looks like a lump of coal in his stocking this Christmas!
