MASON CITY – A Mason City man ended up with a jail sentence after he was stopped by police while driving a car with stolen license plates.
Mason City police tell NIT that on October 8, 2016, at 1:03 PM, an MCPD officer stopped a car at 15th and South Benjamin because the plates on the car were registered to a different vehicle. While speaking to the driver, 19-year-old Jadyn Lee Adams of Mason City, the officer observed two different license plates lying on the rear window deck. One of the license plates on the rear window deck had been reported stolen in June 2015. Officers also found suspected marijuana and a pot pipe in the car. Adams was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property 5th Degree, Possession of Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
In a later plea deal, Adams was guilty of first-offense possession of a controlled substance. The other charges appear to have been dismissed. He was sentenced to 2 days in jail and must pay $551.50 in fines and court fees.

I guess I’m more concerned as to why the police ran his plates in the first place. Contrary to popular belief, police cant just run the plates on your vehicle without probable cause (although it’s fairly common practice). Same as detaining you, they have to believe you’ve committed or will commit a crime. So what was reasonable suspicion that led the LEO to believe a crime had been/would be committed?
Looking up your license plate is taking a code that you are legally required to display openly (i.e., the license plate number) and looking up whatever information they’ve already gathered that’s linked to that code. Since they’re not gathering new information (say, by searching the contents of your car), they don’t need probable cause.
What planet do you live on that you think someone is going to believe that? License plates are not for decoration. Police need probable cause to stop a vehicle. The plates don’t match, which gave them a reason to stop it. Go back to law school. You are ridiculous. Guess what, they can recognize you and ask dispatch how many warrants you have too. Of course it’s much easier to just behave.
