UPDATE: Drunk Charles City man arrested for threatening schoolchildren

CHARLES CITY – Police in Charles City were called to a hotel to deal with an intoxicated man who allegedly claimed he wanted to harm schoolchildren.

According to a source in Charles City, police were called to the Best Budget Inn, located at 1416 South Gilbert Street after 46-year-old Loren T. Saxon of Charles City was there Sunday and appeared to be intoxicated at 1:43 AM. Saxon allegedly caused a disturbance and claimed to belong to a terrorist organization and said he planned to shoot schoolchildren. Records show that police arrested Saxon and charged him with felony threat of terrorism and second offense public intoxication.

Saxon faces a preliminary hearing on September 3, 2014.

STATEMENT FROM CHARLES CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT:

From the information provided to us by Charles City Police Department and the Floyd County Attorney’s office, this person had no weapons and was intoxicated at the time of arrest. This person is a transient who happened to land in our area.

He remains in the Floyd County Jail on a $6,000 cash-only bond. When released the individual will be returned to Minnesota.

The Charles City Police Department will have an increased presence at all our schools. All district employees have been made aware of the situation and have been given his picture.

Acting County Attorney William Baresel announces charges against Loren T. Saxon. On Sunday, August 24th, 2014, Charles City Police responded to a report of an intoxicated individual at Best Budget Inn in Charles City, Iowa. Upon arrival officers encountered a man identified as Loren T. Saxon. According to police reports, Mr. Saxon was heavily intoxicated and made threatening statements against school children. There is no indication that Loren T Saxon acted in connection with anyone else or group. He was arrested and transported to the Floyd County Jail. He remains in jail pending further legal proceedings. Mr. Saxon is being held on $6,000.00 cash only bond in the Floyd County Jail. He was charged with a Class D Felony for Terroristic Threats and a Serious Misdemeanor for Public Intoxication 2nd. The maximum bond allowed by Iowa Law on a Class D Felony is $5,000.00. The maximum bond that is allowed by Iowa Law on a Serious Misdemeanor is $1,000.00. The Floyd County Attorney’s Office will not agree to a reduction of bond. If there are developments in this case that would release Mr. Saxon from jail custody, Mr. Baresel will be in contact with Dr. Cox, the Superintendent for Charles City Schools, to make sure that all necessary precautions are being taken. The safety of our community and our children is of the upmost concern to the Floyd County Attorney’s office and the Charles City Police Department. Everything is being done at this time to insure the safety of the community. As more information becomes available about this situation, this office will be in contact with local media outlets and other organizations that may be concerned.

NOTE: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
