MC council may adopt animal control laws to allow cops to impound “vicious” dogs and then euthanize

MASON CITY – The Mason City council is considering a change to animal control ordinances that would allow a police officer to determine if a dog is dangerous or vicious and then impound the animal – cutting the court system out of the process – and eventually euthanize any animals whose owners make no appeal.

The council will meet this week for a work session to discuss the proposed changes to the ordinances. Mason City staff has proposed a number of changes, which the council will consider and discuss when it meets Tuesday at 5:00 PM at City Hall.

Under the proposed changes, a law enforcement officer would be able to declare a dog vicious and impound the animal, without a court order. If the owner makes no appeal, the animal would be euthanized. The appeals would be heard by the city administrator.

Other changes include clarifications for keeping livestock and beekeeping, as well as a reduction in certain zones for the allowable amount of rabbits and poultry that may be kept.

@2old2oldfat I agree. I remember the old days. Go to court. 30$ or 30 days. Pay or go upstairs. Not so many slackers then.

It’s about time. I guess I was snoozing but when did an animal’s rights become more important than a human’s? It seems one can beat and cripple a fellow man for life and walk away.Kick a darg and do big time. I am against abusing any animal but people need to remember the hierarchy of species.

You don’t have to know them and no I don’t want to meet them but I wish they would just do their job. Way to many bleeding hearts in our country. Back in the day if you got caught doing a crime you did some time and paid the fine or you would be back in the slammer.

@2old2fat What’s with all the profanity?

Do you know our County Attorney? Have you ever spoke to him about your grievances? Do you know any of our judges? If not, how can you pass judgment on them?

You really should back off.

This is all continuing consequences of a depraved, ignorant culture. Solitary confinement is the only cure. Take away their social interaction and they won’t have anyone to be “tough” around. I consider it a privilege, not a right to be around other humans. Some people take it for granted. The animals are a shadow of the true problem. Macho doesn’t exist on the hospital or nursing home bed. These tuff guys never learn that life is a gift.

Sounds like our City Council now doesn’t it? I’s a shame we can’t euthanize a couple of them- I have seen them vicious and mean on a regular basis!

This is just plain wrong. You just cannot kill an animal without a hearing. Sometimes dogs are just scared when u approach them and sound much scarier than they really are.
But, the sad thing is it is a done deal. No matter what the mainstream citizen says– they don’t give one shit! I hope the Humane Society gets involved with this…

what about some of our domestic assault abusers? These assholes just keep beating and then the county prosecutor and our bleeding heart judges let them run free but we have to chain up our pets. Come on man what the f**k is wrong with this picture??????

…don’t really know how the city is going to enforce this “new” law…they have dog ordinances on the books now they don’t/won’t enforce…including Band Festival and Up-in-Smoke BBQ???

The Council should approve this at once. These dogs are taught to be vicious by some scum bags that think it makes them tough. But with all the bleeding hearts in this country you can’t deal with the people so it must be the dog. Once that dog is taught to be aggressive you can’t trust it again and it needs to be put down for everyone’s safety.

@rukidding-I think I must agree with you on this. We have a neighbor that has two pit bulls and I have seen him in the back yard training his dogs to attack on command. This guy had the police called on him several times by neighbors because he was beating up his girlfriend and that was the first week he was there. You can’t shoot him and it is a shame the dogs must pay for what he does but that is what is going to happen. I will shoot them if they come in my yard an threaten my dog, or wife.

There’s NO such thing as a dangerous or vicious dog. Maybe the council should focus more on all the dangerous people that walk the streets and who are breaking into peoples houses, preying & feeding the youth drugs.

I agree with this comment. Get them ALL off the streets. You made your bed
Now lay in it!

“There’s NO such thing as a dangerous or vicious dog.”

Don’t even try to pass that point of view by me, I am a delivery driver and these people order stuff on line. I have been attacked and bitten several times. I am getting pretty sick of it.

Well they euthanized the dept. of human services so why is this a surprise?

Exactly my point. This is how it all started with the Human Rights but different subject. I’m going to start referring to this town as Terminus

You got to be kidding me! I know exactly where this is going. I have an idea why not the city council allow any citizen to decide which officers are vicious . I can see it coming already that if an officer don’t like a specific person or if someone mouths off they will threaten to take their pets. Just like manly did because of personal issues.

@Anonymous-You may be right. I can certainly see that happening. But, if they are fair about it I can see where it would make things easier and less expensive too.
