Latham goes for federal aid for Iowa counties affected by storm

DES MOINES, IOWA, Apr 15 – Iowa Congressman Tom Latham on Sunday quickly signaled his readiness to help southwest Iowa communities and citizens affected by violent storms over the weekend by officially requesting President Obama to make sure appropriate federal aid is available as quickly as possible.

In a letter to President Obama, Congressman Latham urged the White House to work with Iowa officials to make available all appropriate federal assistance to the citizens and communities that were struck by the storms as soon as such aid is determined to be necessary.

“I am writing to share my strong support for any relevant federal disaster relief requested by the Governor should he determine that the damage from the storms warrant a response that is beyond the capabilities of the State of Iowa and local governments,” the letter reads. “I look forward to working with you to expedite any federal assistance that may be requested to the affected citizens and communities.”

Severe thunderstorms swept across southwest Iowa on Saturday, prompting a disaster proclamation from Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad for Fremont and Union counties.  Congressman Latham reached out to Branstad’s office on Sunday to offer any assistance he can to communities and state agencies dealing with the recovery effort.

“When natural disasters strike, Iowans have a long history of locking arms and rebuilding our communities stronger than ever,” Congressman Latham said. “I stand ready to help with this effort in any way I can, and my thoughts and prayers remain with those in Fremont and Union counties and with those across the state who are working to recover from this tragedy.”

Local churches, friends and Mission organizations would be the proper place for help in disaster areas. Government can’t afford to take taxpayers funds to pay for this. Its time for christians to step up and take the responsibilty. ELCA use 92% of their funds to help people here and other nations. Joyce Myers Hand of Hope use 88% of their funds to help here and aboard. We need to stop asking the government for hand outs. Americans need to step up and help their neighbor, no more hand outs. My prayers are with all disaster victims.
