Boehner Column: The Senate must act to help create a better environment for jobs

Washington – This week, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) released the following column discussing House Republicans’ continued action to spur job creation:

“More than 200,000 Americans found work last month, and that’s encouraging. But make no mistake, we’re not out of the woods yet.

“Years of one-size-fits-all, Washington-knows-best policies have not only failed to live up to the president’s promises – they’ve actually made things worse. Just look at the health care law that’s driving up costs, forcing people off of plans they like, and wreaking havoc on small business.

“In the House of Representatives, we’ve been listening to Americans who continue to struggle. That’s why, instead of increasing reliance on government, we’re focusing on pro-growth solutions that promote jobs creation and better wages.

“With our Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs as a blueprint, we’ve been consistently advancing bills to the House floor all year to boost innovation, entrepreneurship and opportunities for all Americans.

“A handful of our bills have cleared the Senate and been sent over to the president’s desk, but far too many are being blocked. In all, the House has passed nearly 150 bills in 2013 that the Senate has failed to act on.

“Many of these are jobs bills – common-sense measures that would do things like reform and improve jobs training programs, increase production of American energy, rein in red tape, help schools recruit and keep the best teachers, protect Americans from the fundamentally-flawed ObamaCare law, and much more.

“The leaders of the president’s party that run the Senate have to do better.

“Here in our area, the agriculture community is counting on a bill to provide farmers and ranchers with certainty so they can move forward in making long-term planning decisions to help feed the nation.

“The House has done its part. In June we passed a farm programs bill, and in September, we passed a nutrition bill that protects our neediest families while also safeguarding against waste, fraud and abuse. In conference, lifelong farmer and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK) has made a number of good-faith offers, but has yet to secure a bipartisan agreement with his Senate counterparts.

“It seems that Senate Democrats are more interested in politics than working together to produce solid reforms. When will they agree to come together on common ground? Because that’s what Americans want.

“It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about the Farm Bill, ObamaCare, or the ongoing budget talks – Americans expect their leaders to act on their concerns and priorities. They are tired of the meddling, the micromanaging and the manipulating. Rather than the special-interest breaks and health care waivers for unions and big businesses, they rightly expect some basic fairness for all.

“The president may be entering his sixth year of office, but it’s not too late for him to change course. He can do the right thing and call on Senate Democrats to stop blocking common-sense reforms that will help create robust, long-term growth.

“There are dozens of House-passed jobs bills just sitting in the Senate, ready to go. All they have to do is say ‘yes.’”

I feel really bad for the people that are trying and are going to lose their unemployment. It is very hard when you get in your upper 40’s and 50’s and are out of work. They just do not want to hire people that old and they can’t retire because mostly they have spent their savings and are to young for social security. It is just so damn hard to separate the people who really need it and the ones that are playing the system. When I see all of the waste our government has I just do not understand why we can’t take care of people who need it. We blow millions on foreign aid and on graft and fraud it just does not make sense. We give billions to farmers and the wind industry but can’t feed our people.

I totally agree with you on this one. There will always be a small % of people playing the system. The vast majority that take help need it and many more that need it don’t take it because of the stigma attached to it. A very good start would be to pay people a true living wage. I don’t mean kids that are working after school ect. But people that are trying to support a family need more than $10 per hour. Even with mom and dad both working $20 per hour doesn’t buy much other than a roof and some food. We need to start taking care of our own first.

@DR Dunn-I agree with you on this. At $20.00 p/hours after deductions it just doesn’t leave very much. That is why it takes two incomes just to get by these days. The problem as I see it is if everyone get $20.00 the greedy will just raise their prices so they get as much profit and then $20.00 becomes nothing. I don’t know the answer but I do know we could do a lot more if we just eliminated waste.

LVS, that IS two incomes. With two people working for just $10 an hour, you get a total of $20 per hour. It’s pathetic. This country is nuts! The rich are taking everything and you conservatives are letting them get away with it. I get such a kick out of Republicans who side with the filthy rich. I know a lot of them, and they’re barely scraping by. Get it? They actually equate themselves with the super-rich. It’s hilarious!

@opinionated-I am goiung to tell you one more time. I am not a Republican and never have been.

Here’s some more liberal spend o crat math. 300 million spent in the state of Oregon on Obama care. 44 signed up to date. Only a liberal spend o crat could find some justification in that insanity. But I guess if all you do is stand around with your hand out steeling from the working it doesn’t matter.

It’s clear you didn’t read the article. It’s about fostering job creation, not crazy fox news inspired ranting about Obamacare! Even Fox news has moved on to bitching about a handshake now… get over it!

Yeah concerned citizen and that would be a great start to forcing people to get off the welfare state created by the spend o crats. One billion dollars to do a website that the private sector could do for 5 to 10 million according to people from amazon and ebay.

Are Republicans really going to refuse to pay Emergency Unemployment, giving a 100% cut… while drawing a hard line in the sand on ensuring doctors do not receive a 25% cut on Medicare funding? If Republicans have their way hundreds of thousands will be left out in the cold when Unemployment is cut on December 28th.

Oh come on, some simply will not get serious about getting a job until there is no other alternative.

So we should cut off our noses to spite our face? Some people need that unemployment thru no fault of their own. 50 and 60 year olds who were forced out of their jobs and unable to find work… Certainly there are folks who will take advantage of any system, but that is NOT and excuse to prevent good hard working Americans from receiving the benefit of this social safety net.

I am not disagreeing with your premise, but how would you reform the system so that those really willing to work go to work and those gaming it would be rejected? Simply shoveling money out the door is not a solution – you get more of what you are willing to pay for.
