DES MOINES – Progress Iowa today announced Governor Terry Branstad the recipient of their ‘Turkey of the Year’ award, highlighting his efforts to mislead Iowans, his failure to keep his campaign promises, and his attacks on the middle and working class in our state. In honor of his distinction as ‘Turkey of the Year’ Progress Iowa will donate a turkey to the Food Bank of Iowa located in Des Moines.
“Iowans are tired of Terry Branstad’s political games,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “He says one thing, then does another. He uses his administration to fudge the facts, instead of doing what’s best for Iowa.”
“Many competed for the award, but Governor Branstad went above and beyond all year to earn the dubious distinction of being named our first-ever ‘Turkey of the Year’,” said Sinovic. “Branstad attempted to mislead us about the number of jobs being created in Iowa, was overruled by the Iowa Supreme Court when he attempted to go after working Iowans, and he was called out on national television for lying.”
Among Gov. Branstad’s 2012 activities that contributed to his receiving the ‘Turkey of the Year’ award:
– Branstad closed 36 Iowa Workforce Development Offices across Iowa, just as out state’s working and middle class needed help the most. The Iowa Supreme Court decalred his line item veto allowing the closures unconstitutional;
– After failing to make significant progress toward his promise to create 200,000 new jobs, Branstad decided to fudge the numbers, inflating his ‘job creation’ count by simply not counting any job losses;
– In the heat of the presidential campaign, Branstad once again mislead Iowans and Americans, this time about welfare reform. Thankfully he was called out for his dishonesty. Unfortunately, he once again poorly represented our state;
– Instead of leveraging federal ta dollars for the benefit of our state, Branstad’s political decision to oppose Medicaid expansion puts at risk 150,000 Iowans who rely on the program for health care;
To mark the occassion of the first ever ‘Turkey of the Year’ award, Progress Iowa will send a printed copy of this press release along with an official congratulatory notice to Governor Branstad.

something else to be thankful for today. glad to know others understand what a turkey he is. PS..he wanted to lower property taxes for buisness, because he owns and rents out comercial property. thus lowering more money out of his pocket

The drumstick also promised a commerial property tax reduction for small struggling business owners only to recant that to raises for pubic servants. Phooooey to you and no desert for you turkeystead!

He has also vowed to veto any legislation that comes across his desk pertaining to the legalization of the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. I would be happy if just MEDICAL marijuana were legalized in Iowa. But with a governor such as this, who lives in the previous century, we mostly likely will not see this happening. Vote him out!

In all seriousness, no, we did not delete any comments, and we were also wondering what happened to comments that were posted today that seem to be lost. My guess is a technical issue with a database server. It’s unfortunate that these websites are not perfect and occasionally an issue arises. It frustrates me as much as it does any reader, believe me.
just seems weird that many people have complained about this subject. Another comment of mine was recently deleted from rants a day or two ago.
Same here. Mine are disappearing after being approved. Also, the recent comments are 24 hours old.
I wouldn’t doubt that it’s someone trying to sabotage this site. Either someone from the Globe or our city government. It’s not that far-fetched.
I am looking at what has been happening to certain comments on NIT disappearing. My tech team suspects that the site admin password was compromised. It’s really the only explanation for some comments disappearing and others not, while the rest of the site was un-touched (seemingly). We will be monitoring closely and set some controls to try and end this issue. Thanks for bearing with us while the issue is worked out.
