MASON CITY – People were forced from their homes this morning in Mason City as heavy rains pummeled the community.

Mason City police say that due to flooding that occurred as a result of heavy rains, the Autumn Park and Chelsea Creek Apartments were evacuated earlier this morning. Both of these apartment complexes sit on South Pierce Avenue.

Currently, water levels are slowly receding on Chelsea Creek. The current forecast has the potential for significant rainfall yet today and through tomorrow. In the event of additional rain, these levels could rise again, creating flooding conditions in this area.

As such, the Mason City Police Department and Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management are asking residents of Autumn Park and Chelsea Creek Apartments to remain at emergency shelter or their current location until we are certain the threat of flooding has passed.

Emergency shelter for displaced residents is available at the Salvation Army, 747 Village Green Drive, Mason City. The shelter will remain open until the flooding threat no longer exists.

Barricades are in place on 12th Street NE between Illinois and Florida.

There is still water over the road and in some places, the shoulder has been washed away. Due to forecasted rains, it will not be possible to repair the shoulder and the road is expected to be closed for the weekend. Please use alternate routes to avoid this area.

the City should charge the owners of this property for their efforts. How many times does this place have to flood before they realize it needs to go.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems like every other year this place to get substantial flood damage and they have to evacuate.

I suggest that you get a copy of the Fire, Police, & EMT annual reports. You would be educated on where the repeat calls actually come from. Once a year at Autumn Park and not every year at Chelsea… And, your compassion for the elderly and disabled are underwhelming !! So, do you think these folks, some who get less than $ 700 a month with which to pay rent, medications, groceries personal supplies , transportation and other basic expenses, can pay the City ?? We cannot control the weather ! And, this is exactly why the public employees are hired for ?? Maybe we need to make the drug dealers, domestic abusers, all criminals pay the City when they are dispatched to a residential call ?? Get a grip !

Good comment!

Excellent comment.

You would not be charging the poor people. Any charges would go to the owners of the property. And yes I think any property that has numerous repear calls should be charged for this.

Maybe they should dredge the creek, or build a food wall to protect the people. They can spend all that money downtown but can’t spend any to help people who live in these area’s?

Ya, try using current pictures. The 2nd one is not Jamie, the guy in back hasn’t worked there for 8 years. At least the Globe can get out of their moms basement and take current pics

Typical NIT.
Copy and paste “journalism” at best.
Inaccuracies thrive on this site.

You used photos from the 2008 flood
