Steve King goes after gay marriage, supports Confederate flag

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Late last week, Congressman Steve King made it clear where he stands on two controversial issues, introducing a resolution of disapproval of gay marriage and calling for protection of the Confederate flag.

On July 10, King introduced a House Resolution disapproving the Supreme Court’s opinion legalizing same-sex marriage.

“The traditional definition of marriage is a union between one man and one woman,” said King. “In a blatant act of judicial activism, the Supreme Court perverted the word ‘marriage’ to create an unconstitutional right to same-sex marriage. Five unelected judges imposed their personal will on the States and the American people by overturning at least thirty states whose constitutions define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

“It is time for Congress to speak out against this Constitutionally baseless decision,” King continued. “That is why I have introduced a resolution of disapproval to ensure the American people know that the House of Representatives strongly opposes the majority opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges.”

This resolution expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that:

– the traditional definition of marriage is a union between one man and one woman;
– the majority opinion unconstitutionally and indefensibly perverts the definition of marriage;
– the States may refuse to be bound by the holding in Obergefell v. Hodges;
– the States are not required to license same-sex marriage or recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states; and
– individuals, businesses, churches, religious groups, and other faith-based organizations are encouraged, empowered, and protected to exercise their faith without fear of legal or government interference.

The previous day, on July 9, King spoke on the House floor in support of protecting the Confederate flag, which was removed from Capitol grounds in South Carolina that day.

Sorry fellows, you can kick King around all you want. I am a conservative independent and King’s politics don’t bother me at all.

When I run the tally of how bad the Democrats have killed jobs, wages, and put this country in debt, I will vote for King.

Same sex marriage is goofy anyway and the Confederate flag is just a diversion. I’m not letting those issues get in my way when if comes to voting for someone that will put the COUNTRY first!

And I doubt King really knows how really bad a low-ball Mayor Bookmeyer is!

Ive never heard one word out of Kings mouth regarding partiotism (whatever that means). Could you please elaborate on how King is promoting patriotism….. and please be specific, dont just parrot to talking points. I ask because I think King is all about King. Hes a showman and a grandstander, playing to a select element within the GOP. Tell me where I am mistaken

I like most of what king says but 1 thing you have to remember about him, he is a politician.

As an independent voter it is republicans like King that make me lean toward the democrats. Lesser of the two evils I guess. I think the Republican Party would do better at election time if they did not have guys like this leading the way and speaking on behalf of the party. Also his close ties with our Mayor is another strike agents him.

@Anonymous Too.-I agree. As I said, radicals on either side are dangerous. and do not help the party image at all.

This Clown and Ernst give Iowa a bad name!

@Iowa Boy-where I agree with you on King, from what I have seen so far Ernst is doing a good job. I think you are bitter because she spanked your candidate real hard in the election. Sour Grapes on your part.

I like Joni but her yes vote for the TPP has me very disappointed.

@maybe-what is TPP?

trans pacific partnership. there are 3 unions, the euroasian union, the asian union and the north american union. the euroasian union is the largest so they have the most voting power. basically what obama and congress did was hand over voting power of our laws and treaties to the un.

The murder at that church and the stink about the confederate flag have all been a distraction so congress can vote on the TPP.

@maybe-Thanks, now I know what it is. Obama is dead set on destroying our country.

Don’t just take my word on it, research it yourself because there is more to the TPP than what I just said.

Read both sides of the argument over TPP. And, if President Obama is “dead set on destroying our country”, he has an accomplice now in Senator Ernst.

I like Joni but I don’t like what she did here.

This guy is dangerous; He is playing to his base as the other blogger said. If more than 15 to 20% of the people voted he would have never left the farm,

@Anonymous-as the other blogger I agree. Fanatics of either party are dangerous but a religious fanatic is the worse.

Oh poor Steve. Lets just go right ahead and refight the Civil War then Unmarry same sex couples. What a waisted effort, you’re pissing into the wind. You have nothing to gain and no new faces will be coming to your party. Quit giving gifts to Dems and Independents!

Legal, tax paying citizens supposedly run this country. Let the people speak and put it to a vote. Add it to the presidential ballot, maybe it will get more people to the poles.

King is playing to his base. He needs to back off battles they have already lost. This is the reason a lot of Independents will not vote for Republicans.
