Charles City man cleared of assault charge

CHARLES CITY – A Charles City man was arrested this past week after an alleged assault, but the charge was dropped two days later.

On October 4 at about 11:30 AM, police went to the 400 block of 4th Avenue for a report of an assault. After an investigation, police arrested 23-year-old Brett Cagely on a charge of domestic assault causing injury.

Two days later, the charge was dropped and a no-contact order in the case was dismissed.

I completely agree, after her hitting me I took my daughter and left. Went down to the police station to have her removed from my house, told them I did not want to press charges. After telling them what happened they placed me under arrest. As I was sitting telling my story she had called the cops, they took her daughters (coached) statement, but when I pressed for them to ask my daughter they had no interest. The ex did right by it and told them it didn’t happen and she was off her pills, but that 26 hours in jail while being truly innocent and this post on the internet still follow me.

Assault is a very serious charge that could affect this young man all of his life. The police have a responsibility to get it right. This practice of arresting the man while they figure it out must stop.

She hit me, my kid saw it. My kid tells police she hit me and I just took it. I go to jail anyway, ex admits she’s mentally unstable and off her pills. I am released and all charges dropped. Considered lawsuit, don’t feel enough police work was done in this situation. Needless to say we are not together anymore. Sat 26 hours in jail for doing exactly as I was raised ‘never put your hands on a woman’ what they don’t tell you is, it’s not what you do, it’s what they say you did in the moment. Left this post alone for years but it’s starting to affect background checks and it’s getting old. -Brett Cagley
