Community steps up to support police chief battling cancer

CLEAR LAKE – Once again, the community of Clear Lake has rallied to support a person in need.

Family, friends and supporters of Clear Lake Police Chief Rex McChesney, who was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, enjoyed a pancake breakfast at the Clear Lake Fire Department. The event was a fundraising for Chief McChesney.

The morning started off at 7 AM, and a trickle of hungry people started to appear. By 8:30 AM or so, the tables were full, the sound of good conversation and laughter filled the room. People were arriving at the Clear Lake Fire Department from all directions, waiting in line for a hit breakfast.

“Our goal is to serve at least three thousand people,” said volunteer Terry Anderson. “The average is three thousand and with this being a fundraiser, we hope to get over that.”

Many of the volunteers were wearing purple t-shirts with the slogan “Help T-Rex Take a Bite out of Cancer.”

Rex’s wife, Jody, was thrilled with how the morning was turning out.

“This is amazing,” she said, the emotion showing.

With his arm around his wife – and looking around the room as well – Rex said “It’s nice to have such a huge support system.”

The breakfast was a free will offering meal. With the proceeds going to help Rex and Jody with inevitable bills. The event is open until 1 PM.

If you were not able to make it, donations can be sent to:

Peter you would complain if you were hung with a new rope. Just be happy for once and say something positive.

Peter, sometimes you should just say something positive.

Illness sucks, so I’d never hold that against someone who doesn’t do their job properly, but really, pancakes, sausage and high fructose corn syrup? Can you aid the Cancer any more? Why not breakfast potatoes, carrots, beets, and anything else that can be construed to be nutritious and anti-cancer. Don’t you think a diagnosis of cancer is time to change course in your diet? Green drinks, almond milk, green tea, mixed berries, walnuts, pecans etc. So many better options.

The purpose was to raise money, so you serve what Iowans like to eat. It’s how we do it here in North Iowa.

@Philly-where I agree that some foods are not healthy and I personally wouldn’t eat them, (diabetic you know) other people (most people) enjoy and like them. You have to sell what people like or they will not buy it. The cause was good and I hope it was a big success.

What a terribly insensitive, detached, ego driven comment. You have the brains and the ability to connect words into sentences but your people skills and empathy suck.

One could argue I was offering the man and the community good advice. Everyone takes everything I say as vitriolic. Truth is, I’m fatigued…weary that I was tasked with schooling and disciplining an ENTIRE REGION, including city government and police forces. Cultural Overhaul isn’t easy. You should take time to commend me…send me on an Alaskan Cruise. I’ve done well for this community. The benefits will start rolling in, in a few more years, once people have digested all my lessons
