MASON CITY — A joint investigation into the exploitation of the vulnerable has led to criminal charges against two local caregivers accused of systematically draining a client’s resources for their own personal gain.
The investigation began in October 2025, when the Mason City Police Department received a referral regarding suspected financial dependent-adult abuse. Working alongside employees from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), detectives uncovered evidence suggesting a breach of trust that spanned several months. Authorities allege that two employees used a client’s credit cards and medical benefits without authorization to purchase various goods and services for themselves.
Jessica Marie Glaspey, 35, of Mason City, was the first to be apprehended, with her arrest occurring on Jan. 2, 2026. Glaspey was hit with a litany of charges, including four counts of Dependent Adult Abuse and one count of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card involving an amount between $1,500 and $10,000. Following her initial arrest, she was released under the supervision of the Department of Correctional Services. On April 2, 2026, Glaspey effectively brought her portion of the case to a close by entering a written plea of guilty in district court.
The second suspect, 29-year-old Sabrina Jo Burke, also of Mason City, was taken into custody on Feb. 22, 2026. Burke faces two counts of Dependent Adult Abuse and one count of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card ($1,500–$10,000). Unlike her co-defendant, Burke has maintained her innocence. While she posted bond and was released shortly after her arrest, court records show she entered a written arraignment and a plea of not guilty on April 2, 2026.
Burke is currently scheduled for a pretrial conference on June 29, 2026, at 1:00 PM. If a resolution is not reached, a jury trial is set to begin on July 14, 2026, at 8:30 AM to determine her involvement in the alleged months-long misconduct.
