MASON CITY — The historic Surf Ballroom was transformed into a powerhouse of philanthropy and performance as 43 North Iowa’s signature “Dancing for the Dream” fundraiser shattered records, raising more than $200,000 to support local individuals living with disabilities and mental health challenges. The sold-out event brought together a capacity crowd to celebrate a night defined by community spirit and creative energy.
The 2026 edition of the competition reached unprecedented heights, fueled by a months-long lead-up of grassroots fundraising. Beyond perfecting their routines, this year’s eight dance teams engaged in a variety of unique community efforts, including celebrity bartending nights, March Madness squares, and “flocking” local yards. Executive Director John Derryberry noted that the evening was about much more than the footwork on stage, emphasizing that the turnout proves North Iowa is a supportive, inclusive place where everyone’s unique abilities are celebrated.
The competition itself was more intense than ever, thanks to the addition of new award categories designed to spike crowd engagement. Among the highlighted winners, Tyler and Taylor Hedegard took home the prize for Best Costumes, while Casidey and Chris Burk were recognized for the Best Signature Move. Brian and Robbie Pauly earned the Best Music Selection title for their 90s mash-up, a performance so high-energy it also secured them the Judges Choice Award for Best Overall Dance Performance.
Other specialty awards included J. Brooks and Amanda Kaufman for Best Use of the Stage, Grace Moore Klapperich and Ben Klapperich for Best Crowd Engagement, and Eric and Brenda Merritt for Best Energy. Stacy Doughan and Amy Hogg were honored for Best Use of Props, while Danielle Pace and Shelbey Schade won for Best Storytelling.
When the final fundraising tallies were revealed, the competition for the top spots was fierce. Brian and Robbie Pauly took third place, while Danielle Pace and Shelbey Schade earned second-place honors. However, it was the duo of Grace Moore Klapperich and Ben Klapperich who claimed the top prize, taking home the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy as the night’s first-place fundraisers.
Reflecting on the win, Grace Moore Klapperich expressed humility at the level of community backing, noting that while dancing might not be their primary talent, the dedication to making North Iowa better was the true inspiration behind the effort. The funds raised will go directly toward 43 North Iowa programs that assist individuals with home life, employment, and community integration.
Organizers extended a special thanks to lead sponsors Connoisseur Media, Curries, and Hoover’s Hatchery, along with the numerous volunteers and auction donors who made the record-breaking total possible. Supporters are already encouraged to mark their calendars for next year’s event, scheduled for April 3, 2027.
