Nancy J. Young, 87, of Garner passed away Sunday, March 22, 2026, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 26th, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner.

Nancy J. Young, 87, of Garner passed away Sunday, March 22, 2026, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 26th, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Paulraj Sellam officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., Garner, with a parish rosary at 3:15 p.m. followed by a Scriptural wake service.

Nancy Jean Young, the daughter of Robert and Martha (Martens) Anderson, was born on August 6, 1938, in Northwood, Iowa. She grew up in Mason City and graduated from high school in 1956. On June 3, 1957, she was married to Bill Young at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City. They lived all of their married life on the family farm west of Garner, where they raised their five children. Nancy was a school cook at Garner-Hayfield Community Schools for 26 years. She enjoyed her family, sewing, baking, and vacations in northern Minnesota and South Dakota.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society and was a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader for many years. Above all, Nancy cherished her family. She loved spending time creating lasting memories filled with laughter, love, and togetherness. Her family was the center of her world. She had a lifelong passion for sewing. She was also an avid doll collector and took pride in her carefully curated collection.

Nancy is survived by her five children, David (Roxie) Young of Hartselle, AL, Scott (Monica) Young of Garner, Lisa (Mark) Watts of New Sharon, IA, Gary (Amy) Young of Mason City and Brenda (Tim) O’Hare of Rushford, MN; grandchildren, Christopher (Stephanie) Young, Angela (Bo) Simmons, Pamela (Charlie) Boyd, Melissa Rizzo, April (Adam) Brackin, Chase (Miranda) Suggs, Amy (Seth) Fitzgerald, Katie (Eric) Butcher, Megan (Roman) Meyers, Tressa Watts (fiance Jace Bloomer), Samuel (Regan) Watts, Caleb Young, Joseph Young, Austin (Danielle) O’Hare, Bailey O’Hare (Sr. Zelie Marie RSM) and Luke (Karissa) O’Hare; many great and great-great grandchildren; a sister, Sharon De Maris of Mason City; sister-in-law Joyce Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, June 9, 2012; her parents; siblings, Verna May (Myron) Dobbertin, Henry Thompson, Helen (Lynn) Turbett, Gerald (Marlys) Thompson, Mavis (Pat) Fitzgerald; brother-in-law, Leonard “Slim” (Donna) Young; and sister-in-law Betty (Bill) Lein.
