Since being elected, Callanan said one of his top priorities has been respecting taxpayers. He noted that the county has lowered its tax levy each year during his term.
“I don’t take it lightly when people trust us with their tax dollars,” Callanan said. “Lowering the levy year after year shows that we can be responsible with spending while still meeting the needs of our county.”
Callanan said his work on the board has focused not only on finances, but also on maintaining and improving quality of life in Cerro Gordo County. He pointed to expanded recreational opportunities and continued investment in secondary roads as examples of efforts that benefit residents across the county.
“These are things people use every day,” he said. “Strong roads, good infrastructure, and places for families to gather all matter when you’re trying to build a community people want to stay in.”
With property tax reform expected to be debated at the Iowa Legislature this session, Callanan said experience on the board will be important as potential changes affect local budgets.
“There’s a lot that’s still uncertain,” he said. “What I do know is that decisions made at the state level will have a direct impact locally, and I want to make sure Cerro Gordo County has an experienced voice at the table.”
Callanan said his approach to public service is shaped by his experience as a business owner.
“I approach county government the same way I approach my business,” he said. “You take care of your people, you plan ahead, and you don’t spend money you don’t have. That balance is important, and it’s something I work at every day.”
Callanan, 45, lives in Clear Lake with his wife, Hunter. He is a graduate of Clear Lake High School, North Iowa Area Community College, and Iowa State University.
