CHARLES CITY – This violent Charles City man given wrist slaps for his domestic attacks that included strangulation was arrested for felony theft, but quickly released from jail.

Floyd county jail

NIT previously reported that 37-year-old Cortez Jones of Charles City was arrested on March 30, 2020, for felony D third-offense domestic assault and obstruction of emergency communication in that community. Records show both charges were dropped. NIT also reported that Jones was involved in a number of domestic assault cases prior to that incident. Back in 2016, in Floyd county district court, Jones received a deferred judgement for felony domestic abuse and was placed on probation. In 2018, Jones was guilty of second-offense domestic abuse, again in Floyd county. He was given a year in jail with all but two days  suspended.  He was accsused, later, of violating  no-contact order in the case twice and sent to jail for 7 days for violating his probation.

Jones was then arrested in Charles City on May 19, 2025. That evening, Charles City police went to the 600 block of North Jackson Street for a domestic assault incident. They arrested Jones for felony D domestic assault with strangulation, third or subsequent offense domestic abuse assault and trespassing. A woman judge dropped the charge of third or subsequent offense domestic abuse assault and downgraded the felony charge to an aggravated misdemeanor. She suspended a 2-year-prison sentence except for 2 days and put him on one month of probation. She ordered him to pay Iowa courts $1,738.72.

Jones (pictured at top) was nabbed by Charles City police on December 20, 2025, at 12:38 AM on a warrant for felony theft out of Linn County. Records show Jones posted $5,000 bond and was released into the community under Departmetn of Corrections supervision on December 23. He awaits a hearing next month in court.
