Women’s College Basketball: Iowa State slams UNI, 81-53

AMES - UNI women's basketball traveled to Ames, Iowa to take on the No. 10-ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday evening. The Cyclones flexed their offensive efficiency and shot 44.8% from the field and 41.4% from deep to hand the Panthers an 81-53 loss inside Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State (12-0, 0-0 Big 12) sealed the season in-state sweep with the 81-53 victory over UNI (4-6, 0-1 MVC) to close non-conference. ISU sweeps Drake, Iowa and UNI for the first time since 2021-22.

AMES – UNI women’s basketball traveled to Ames, Iowa to take on the No. 10-ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday evening. The Cyclones flexed their offensive efficiency and shot 44.8% from the field and 41.4% from deep to hand the Panthers an 81-53 loss inside Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State (12-0, 0-0 Big 12) sealed the season in-state sweep with the 81-53 victory over UNI (4-6, 0-1 MVC) to close non-conference. ISU sweeps Drake, Iowa and UNI for the first time since 2021-22.

The Panthers were the first on the board with back-to-back buckets from Ryley Goebel and Jenna Twedt to take a 4-0 lead. Goebel netted the next six Panther points to give UNI 10 to the Cyclones six after a pair of three-pointers. Iowa State finished the first quarter on a 14-5 run to lead by five at 20-15 heading into the second quarter.

The Panthers struck first in the second quarter on a deep ball from Mya Nicholson. A 13-2 run from the Cyclones put Iowa State up 13 points at 33-20. Bri Robinson scored UNI’s next six points before Iowa State closed the first half on an 11-point run to hold a 48-26 advantage heading into the halftime break. At the break, Ryley Goebel led the Panthers with eight points. Elise Jaeger brought in six boards and dished out three assists in the first half.

Iowa State led the third quarter 19-12 before UNI edged out the Cyclones in the final frame 15-14. A late seven-point run for the Panthers was the difference maker in the fourth quarter. The run saw buckets from Kaylynn Janes and Lauren Walker as well as a three-pointer from Abby Tuttle. Iowa State outlasted the Panthers and took home an 81-53 victory after all 40 minutes were played.

Abby Tuttle led UNI with 13 points. She added five assists and three rebounds off the bench. Rykley Goebel finished with 10 points and five boards while Elise Jaeger led the game with 12 rebounds.

Iowa State juniors Audi Crooks and Evangelia Paulk were out for Sunday’s game against UNI. Crooks is out with an injury she sustained during Wednesday’s win over Iowa. She is expected to finish return-to-play protocol early this week. Paulk is out with a mild soft tissue injury.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

UNI falls to 4-6 on the season after the loss at Iowa State.

UNI continued an active program-record 556-game three-pointer streak with four triples against Iowa State.

Abby Tuttle finished with career-highs of 13 points, four field goals, two three-pointers, and three free throws and tied career-highs with three rebounds and one steal.

Iowa State women’s basketball’s all-time record moves to 883-678 (.566) and 646-325 (.665) in the Bill Fennelly era.

Fennelly’s career record moves to 812-378 (.682) in his 38-year career.

Iowa State is 12-0 for the fourth time in program history. It is the best start to a season since 2013-14, when the Cyclones started 14-0, the best start in school history.

With a win tonight, the Cyclones finished the regular season non-conference slate undefeated for the first time since 2013-14 (11-0) and fourth time in program history (1995-96, 2001-02).

The Cyclones’ all-time series record against the Panthers is now 40-11.

Addy Brown passed Heather Ezell (414), Tracy Horvath (415) and Tracy Gahan (415) on Iowa State’s all-time assists leaderboard, adding three dimes and moving her career total to 416 assists as ISU’s eighth all-time leading distributor. The Derby, Kansas native recorded a season-high 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor with four 3-pointers.  Brown also pulled down 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and 23rd of her career. She is tied for seventh all-time in Iowa State history with Bridget Carleton.
Brown’s 10th rebound of the night also marked her 650th career board.

Kenzie Hare recorded her 50th rebound at Iowa State with her second board of the night.

Arianna Jackson tallied her 400th career point with her first triple of the night. Jackson has posted 403 points as a Cyclone.

Alisa Williams made her first career start tonight, finishing with 11 points and five boards.

Jada Williams pulled down her 200th career rebound with her first board of the night.

With a jumper in the fourth quarter, Reagan Wilson pushed her career point total past 100.

The Panthers are back in action on Sunday, December 21, as they head to St. Thomas to take on the Tommies. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT with streaming on the Summit League Network. The matchup will also be available on the Panther Sports Radio Network.
