MASON CITY – The 22nd Annual Volunteer Recognition Award Banquet was held at the MacNider Art Museum Salsbury Room in Mason City on December 4, 2025. The theme this year was Shining Stars. Around 65 volunteers were recognized for their work on behalf of the Volunteer Service Department on various projects including Adopt-A-Lot, Beautification, Parks, MacNider Museum events, Recreation Department, Highland Golf Course, and other special projects including school partnerships, graffiti eradication, tree plantings and administrative assistance.
Holly Ames and Charlie West were named this year’s recipients of the Shining Star award. Holly volunteers her time at the Cannonball Park and Charlie at the Cemetery for many years. The 2025 Shining Star Team recognition was awarded to the Shining Stars formally the (Shady Ladies) for the work at Central Park Flower Garden.
Rookie of the Year Award, this is only the 5th year is has been awarded; the award went to a new volunteer to Mason City; award went to Kaitlyn Thangaraj working at the 457 Cannonball.
GEM (Going the Extra Mile) was awarded Nathan Bond for years of service to the Recreation Department, which he supported over the years.
The Shining Star Award is awarded to individuals and teams or businesses that contribute to the needs of the City. It’s through their efforts that others see the commitment and dedication they share with the community.
City Council members were present to help celebrate the contributions volunteers make to the city organization.
Mayor Bill Schickel gave his appreciation and thanks to the Volunteers, and Recreation and Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery Department Staff assisted in presenting the Shining Star awards. City Administration Staff and Volunteer Coordinator presented the other individual awards.
The Volunteer Service Department is a department of the City of Mason City. The City Volunteer program promotes and coordinates volunteer opportunities within City departments to citizens seeking to enhance the community by donating their time and skills to various municipal projects.
