September 6, 1955 – December 4, 2025
Karen Kay Courter, beloved mother, daughter, and sister died Thursday, December 4, 2025 at the age of 70.
Karen was born on September 6, 1955, in Charles City, Iowa, the youngest daughter of John and Betty (Raymond) Hayungs. She attended school in Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock.
Growing up, their family of 7 lived on a farm in Greene, Iowa where they raised dogs and sheep. Karen always had a love for dogs that stayed with her throughout her entire life, with her favorite babies being Sadie and Bella who would go most anywhere with Karen.
In June of 1985 Karen gave birth to her only child, her favorite, Lisa. They made their home where she raised her daughter in Rudd, Iowa to be close with family.
Karen worked until she was no longer able and enjoyed a quiet and comforting routine filled with Soduko, crosswords and jigsaw puzzles. She and her daughter would play their favorite games of Aggravation and Rumikub for hours at the kitchen table. She also loved watching football, often keeping scores of multiple games as well as catching her favorite WWE wrestling matches.
She wouldn’t go anywhere without a can of Pepsi and a candy bar, mostly mini-Hershey bars beings they could be easily tucked in her shirt pocket for convenience.
In 2019 Karen suffered multiple strokes, leaving her with the onset of dementia ending her career and no longer being able to be the independent person her family once knew her as.
Those left to cherish memories of Karen are her daughter, Lisa (Nicholas) Anderson.
Karen is proceeded in death by both of her parents, John and Betty, brothers, David, John Jr., Darrell, infant Richard, and a sister, Sharon Hayungs.
