Hampton man dies in fiery crash after Subaru vaults and crashes into grain elevator

HAMPTON - A Subaru Forester traveling at what authorities called a "very high rate of speed" crashed into a building this morning, caught fire, and brought a tragic end to the male driver from Hampton.

HAMPTON – A Subaru Forester traveling at what authorities called a “very high rate of speed” crashed into a building this morning, caught fire, and brought a tragic end to the male driver from Hampton.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a crash occurred Monday morning in Hampton. At 1:08 AM, a 2024 Subaru Forester driven by 35-year-old Ty Borcherding of Hampton was southbound on on E. RR Street. Near Northrup Street, as the vehicle was traveling at a “very high rate of speed,” the Forester left the roadway, vaulted, and struck a concrete grain elevator. The vehicle came to rest against a metal door and caught fire.

Tragically, Ty Borcherding was killed in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin General Ambulance Service, Dows Fire, Belmond Fire, and Clarion Fire.
