BURLINGTON, IOWA – This Iowa man with a colorful past is accused by police of sexually abusing a child over the course of at least a year, and allegedly threatened to hunt the child down for revenge if they didn’t comply with his desires.

On April 11, 2025, at approximately noon, officers from the Burlington Police Department spoke with a Department of Health and Human Services employee who reported a sexual assault in reference to one of her clients. Detectives from the Burlington Police Department investigated the crime and learned that a juvenile victim reported a male, later identified as Tourmaria Baynes, sexually assaulted the juvenile between August 2022 and August 2023.

According to a newspaper report, the victim described to police the acts of abuse, stating they happened “many times” and that the first incident occurred when their mother had left to go to work, according to the complaint. The victim also told police that, during the last incident of the alleged abuse, Baynes grabbed them by the mouth, threatened to “hunt” them “down at school” if they told their mother about the abuse, and threatened to hit them if they did not engage in a sex act with him, the complaint states.

After investigating the case, two warrants were issued for Baynes’ arrest, charging him with two counts of B felony Sex Abuse in the Second Degree.

On May 22, 2025 Baynes was located in the 1700 block of Division Street in Burlington and arrested on the two warrants.

Baynes (pictured at top) is being held at the Des Moines County Jail without bond.
