Virgil H. Meyer, 90, of Sumner, died Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 2, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church-Spring Fountain, rural Sumner with Rev. Tanner Post officiating. Interment will follow at Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township, rural Sumner. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Thursday, May 1st at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Virgil’s name to St. John Lutheran Church-Spring Fountain or Cobblestone Court Assisted Living.

Virgil Harold, son of Edward and Mertie (Stahlhut) Meyer was born November 15, 1934, at the family’s home, rural Sumner. He was baptized December 9, 1934, by Rev. Theo Klatt and confirmed April 2, 1950, by Rev. William Nagler, both at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. Virgil received his education in the rural Sumner Schools. On June 9, 1957, he was united in marriage with Norma Abbas at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Frederika. To this union four children were born, Lynn, Lorri, Brenda, and Gene. Virgil began his working career in farming, prior to a long career as a truck driver, retiring at the age of 87, following forty plus years owning his own truck. He has been a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church-Spring Fountain since 1964, served on the Finance Board of the Church, and bowled in a league with his wife, Norma. He enjoyed spending time on his acreage and loved attending his grandchildren’s softball games.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Norma of Sumner; three children, Lorri (Keith) Huck, Brenda (Randy) Foster, both of Waverly, and Gene (Susie) Meyer of Sumner; eleven grandchildren, Andrew (Megan) Huck, Beth (Dan) Hubbard, Thomas (Stacy) Huck, Abby (Matt) Krueger, Ashley (Izaak) Miller, Allison and Anna Foster, Tyler Meyer, Trevor (Hannah) Meyer, Laura (Garty) Taye, and Austin (Joy) Meyer; twenty-one great-grandchildren; sisters, Gerry Kane of Oelwein and Mary (George) Wilkens of Waverly; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Corrine Meyer of Sumner, Vickie Stancati of Denver, Arlo Pipho of Readlyn, and Dixie Abbas of Plainfield; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Meyer on February 17, 2017; granddaughter, Isabelle Linn Meyer on February 19, 2020; two brothers, Milton “Shorty” Meyer and Elroy Meyer; and sisters, Lois (Alfred) Specht and Marlys (Bob) Figanbaum.
