Northern Iowa band director arrested for exploitation of a student

DECORAH, IOWA – A band director in this Northern Iowa town is facing a felony after police say a relationship with a student went way too far.

On February 15, 2025, the Decorah Police Department received report from an individual who had concerns about what they felt was an inappropriate relationship between a Decorah High School teacher and a student. The reporting party provided some evidence that they felt substantiated their concerns. Based on this evidence, contact was made with the student, and additional corroborating evidence was discovered.

The Decorah Police Department began the process of notifying the Decorah Community School District administration of this active investigation. The Decorah Community School District and the Decorah Police Department worked together to isolate this incident, to ensure student salfety, to allow tor a! complete and thorough investigation.

As a result of this investigation, one person has been arrested. Dustin Harland Bliven, age 48 of Decorah, was charged with Felony A Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee. If guilty, this crimes is punishable by up to 5 years on prison and a fine between $1,025 and $10,0245.

Bliven was transported to the Winneshiek County Jail.

According to Facebook, Bliven describes himself as “Husband, Father, Health Coach, Cyclist, Band Director, and someone who loves the outdoors and Camping” and “Band Director at Decorah Community School District”.
