MASON CITY – This illegal Mason City driver with a history of lawbreaking became entangled in an auto crash and when the other driver informed her he called cops, she calmly got in her car and fled the scene – but she soon found herself in the familiar digs of the county jail.
The incident took place on Monday evening, February 10, 2025. At about 5:41 PM, driver Gabriel Infante called police, as a good citizen should, to report an auto collision near the intersection of 9th Street and N Hampshire Avenue in Mason City. Police tell NIT that the two drivers spoke briefly, and Infante apparently informed the other driver – 43-year-old Brandi Lynn Burtis of Mason City – that he had already called police to start a report. Burtis then allegedly walked back to her vehicle and left the scene before police arrived – which would be a crime. This set off a domino effect of bad outcomes for Burtis.
Police say the fleeing vehicle driven by Burtis, a black 2007 Pontiac G6, was located a short while later, unoccupied, at 114 5th Street NE.
Police located Burtis and she was arrested that same evening around 7 PM on the following charges:
– Driving while Suspended/Revoked (SENTENCING HEARING SCHEDULED FOR 08/11/2025)
– No Insurance – Accident Related (Already entered guilty plea, ordered to pay $796.75 to Iowa courts)
– Leaving the Scene of Accident (Already entered guilty plea, ordered to pay $215.25 to Iowa courts)
Burtis’ Pontiac G7 was also towed away.
No injuries were reported in the collision, and the preliminary damage estimate combined is roughly $1,000.
NIT reported last year that Burtis was the subject of alleged thefts of booze at local establishments, including Hy-Vee East. Police put her photo out for public discourse, and she was soon nabbed, charged, and guilty in court. She had to pay hundreds of dollars to Iowa courts, as a result.
Records also show that Burtis, who appears to have a lengthy previous criminal history, was put on probation for three years back in March of 2022 in a felony drug case, charged by Mason City police. She had avoided a 5-year prison sentence (suspended) in the plea deal. Her probation could be in jeopardy after these most recent alleged crimes.
