Palmer Helgren, 71 of Garner, died on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at his home in Garner. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Schott Funeral Home.

Palmer Helgren, 71 of Garner, died on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at his home in Garner, IA.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Schott Funeral Home – Forest City, 505 N. Clark St, Forest City, IA 50438 with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday at the Funeral Home.

Burial of his cremains will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Rose Hill Cemetery perpetual care fund or to the family’s discretion.

Palmer Gene Helgren was born on October 11, 1953 in Buffalo Center, IA to parents Ernest and Beverly (Haberkamp) Helgren. He graduated from Thompson High School in 1973. He lived in Thompson, IA his whole life until December of 2023, when he moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner.

Palmer started doing construction work when he was old enough to hold a hammer and pound a nail with his father and later, with his brother Eddie. He truly was a jack of all trades and was always willing to step in and help someone if they needed something fixed. He loved all animals, but especially sheep, chickens, cats, and dogs.

Palmer is survived by his sister, Shirley (Curtis) Anderson of Garner; brother, Harlan (Debi) Helgren of Marshalltown, IA; nephew, Nathan (Luz) Anderson; nieces, Melissa (Nathan) Noland, Amanda(Andy) Braun, Erika (Brett) Burkhart, and Erin Helgren; aunts, Bethel Lemke and Helen Trenhaile; and many great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Beverly; brother, Edward; uncles, Clark Trenhaile and Ferd Lemke; aunt and uncle, Kathy and Marvin Helgren, and Alpha and Gorden Vail.
