Iowa drunk driver accused of vehicular homicide in death of motorcyclist

CEDAR RAPIDS – Police say a drunk driver toting an open container of booze crashed into and killed an Iowa man riding his motorcycle, and now he faces serious charges.

Nicholas Cox was killed by an alleged drunk driver while riding his motorcycle.

Cedar Rapids police arrested 30-year-old Spenser Kann of Cedar Rapids on Wednesday after an investigation into a fatal accident. The accident took place on August 21, 2024 at the intersection of 6th St SW and Wilson Ave SW in Cedar Rapids. Police say Kann was driving a vehicle while toting an open container of booze and failed to yield during a turn, then struck and killed 44-year-old motorcyclist Nicholas Cox of Cedar Rapids. He appears to have owned a Halry-Davidson motorcycle.

Kann (pictured at top) was booked at the Linn County Correctional Center and faces the following charges:

– Homicide by Vehicle OWI

– OWI 2nd Offense

– Fail to Yield Left Turn

– Open Container

Kann remains jailed as he awaits court appearances.
