CLEAR LAKE – Schools across Iowa this week were disrupted by rumors of threats that were amplified on social media, apparently with the sole purpose of causing unnecessary concern and distress.
On Wednesday, the Clear Lake Police Department received reports of a possible school threat on social media that included a list of schools, one of which was in the Clear Lake School District. Other schools across Iowa reported the same types of information.
Investigators diligently investigated the matter and determined the list of schools published on social media was from outside the state of Iowa. Clear Lake investigators worked on forwarding information to authorities in the proper state.
Authorities say that no credible threat was identified for the Clear Lake Community School District. District officials have been working hand in hand with the police department to ensure a safe learning environment for both students and staff and will be taking extra steps to ensure their ongoing safety.
