A common concern consumers share is the cost of a carport. A primary advantage carports have over garages is the price. You expect to pay less for a carport but this doesn’t help you plan a budget. However, you can come up with the estimated expense once you know the factors in calculating carport construction costs

So, what factors should you consider in your carport budget? This can include anything from the structure’s size to the type of materials used in construction. Here’s a look at some of the factors that can affect the overall cost of a carport.

Factors Affecting Carport Costs

Carports can be a great investment. You get additional storage space that also protects your belongings from the elements. Even though carports are usually a more affordable option than constructing a garage. The structure still comes at a price. How much you end up paying for your carport depends on a few factors.

Type of Metal

Most carports are constructed from either aluminum or steel. You can go with another material like wood, but we’re focusing on steel and aluminum due to their popularity. Aluminum is less expensive but you’re sacrificing a little durability. Even thicker gauge aluminum can still dent and warp more easily than steel.

Steel carports are priced higher than aluminum, but you may be able to save some money in the long run on maintenance and repairs. Steel is known for its strength and durability. While this may not mean you’re seeing a return on your investment, steel can be a more affordable long-term option. The thickness of the metal will also impact overall costs.

Carport Size and Design

An obvious factor affecting carport costs is the structure’s size. Larger carports are going to cost more for the simple fact you’re using more materials. For example, a double or triple carport is going to be more expensive than one that can only fit a single vehicle.

Carports also aren’t limited to only a couple of designs. You can have a custom-designed carport installed on your property. Maybe the location has an odd shape and a standard rectangular carport simply isn’t going to fit. You can order a custom carport but this is going to increase the overall cost.

Location

If you have an existing foundation in place like poured concrete, installing your carport isn’t going to add a lot to the total cost. Carports are prefabricated structures, so all the installation needs to do is assemble the structure and anchor it to the foundation.

However, if you need to have the ground leveled before installing the carport, the process will add to the cost, and this also applies if you don’t have an existing foundation. You may be able to reduce overall costs a little by opting to go with a dirt, gravel, or asphalt foundation. Dirt and gravel foundations are inexpensive. Asphalt is a little more expensive but it’s still a little cheaper than going with a poured concrete foundation.

However, don’t skip a poured concrete foundation just to keep costs down. Sometimes, concrete is the best option. Talk to the installation company before making a final decision.

Additional Features

If you go with a standard carport design, a roof, and four supporting poles, you can keep costs at a minimum. However, sometimes you want a little more protection from the elements than just a roof. You can easily add walls to just about any type of carport but this does increase the purchasing price.

You can also play around with the roof’s style. Steel carports can have vertical or regular flat roofs. You can also choose an A-frame style roof, which is a great way to add some curb appeal to a carport. You’re also not limited to using only steel for the roofing material. Just keep in mind that most design changes typically mean an increase in the carport’s price.

Are you thinking about adding features like shelving, doors, and even electrical outlets? Guess what, these additions can also impact the price you end up paying.

A quick tip: if you’re considering running electricity to the carport, it’s a good idea to consult with a local electrical company. Sometimes, the cost of connecting a carport to the electrical grid is more than you may want to pay.

Carports Can Be More Affordable Than You Think

You can keep costs low and still get a carport that meets your needs. However, it’s important not to cut corners just to save money. Focus on the quality of the materials used and ensure the carport has the features you require.

With just a little bit of planning, you can install an affordable carport on your property that’s both functional and durable.
