BURLINGTON – An Iowa couple allegedly burned their house down then filed an insurance claim on the incident, and now face serious charges.

On April 4, 2024, at approximately 4:51 PM, officers and the Burlington Fire Department were dispatched to 1015 N Central Avenue regarding a house fire. Officers arrived on scene and observed smoke coming from this residence, which is owned by Heather (Mougin) Dawson. The fire appeared to be suspicious in nature. The Burlington Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division was called to assist the Burlington Fire Marshal. Detectives learned that Heather Dawson was married to Derek Dawson and they now reside in Illinois. Derek Dawson’s truck was seen leaving the area prior to the fire being noticed. Detectives further learned Derek had spoken to others about starting the fire.

Police say Heather Dawson attempted to file an insurance claim for the loss of the residence.

Warrants were recently issued for the couple’s arrest and they have been apprehended and face the following charges:

Heather Dawson: Insurance Fraud

Derek Dawson: Arson 2nd Degree and Insurance Fraud

The Burlington Police Department was assisted by the Burlington Fire Department and The Peoria Police Department.
